QCCC

Organizing

What is a Union?

It is an organization that advances its members’ interests with respect to wages, benefits and working conditions. A union:

  • represents workers in employer negotiations
  • protect workers’ rights and supports an overall better quality of life
  • stewards the highest standards of safety, work quality and conduct in the industry

"The majority of NDT and Field Heat Treatment technicians in Canada are unionized."

Myth #1: “Union workers are lazy.”

With the power of collective bargaining, union workers enjoy more stability and don’t have to worry about employers changing their working terms. But being a member does not mean a worker is immune to disciplinary action: unions like the QCCC have a Standard for Excellence outlining what is expected of members.

What is Organizing?

Organizing (unionizing) is the process by which employees elect to have a union represent them in the workplace. You do not need your employer’s permission; it is your legal right to organize, and this right is protected by the Constitution under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Myth #2: “You don’t need the union; we’re your family.”

You are an employee, and an employer’s appeal based on emotional connection should not affect your rate, benefits or working conditions. A union like the QCCC will ensure fair compensation, equal representation and working standards, which are protected by law.

Why Join a Union?

You can be assured of a fair wage and double time (not banked for lieu time-off). You receive dental, vision and prescription benefits, and access to free training, an employee assistance program, life insurance, disability coverage and extended health benefits. Joining a union also ensures your right to safe working conditions and a guaranteed pension. Learn more.

Myth #3: Non-union wages are higher.”

While bases rate for non-unionized technicians may be higher, their overall compensation package is lower. Once things like pension, benefits, vacation pay, properly paid overtime/double-time, and shift premiums are taken into account, there’s no competition. Compare NDT tech rates using our module.

How to Join a Union?

Connect with a QCCC Union Organizer who will provide confidential support, explain your legal rights and advise you through the process: organize@qcccanada.com or 587-405-6116

With the help of an Organizer, coordinate with coworkers to start an organizing drive. At this point, your employer may or may not be aware that an organizing drive is in progress: your organizer will familiarize you and prepare you for potential ‘Union Busting Tactics’. Remember, your right to organize is protected by law.

Workers sign a petition/union card indicating. The anonymity of anyone participating in this process is protected by law. Once a minimum percentage of employees have signed, the Union applies for certification with a Labour Relations Board and your employer is notified. An employer is prevented by law from making any changes to your employment once an application is filed.

A secret ballot vote determines whether employees favour union representation. If a majority (50% +1 vote or more) is in favour, the union is certified to become your representative and negotiate on your behalf.

Remember: Every company starts as a non-union company until the choice is made to become a union.

Myth #4: "You’ll never even see that pension.”

Pension contributions are part of QCCC’s wage package and not bound to a Member’s employer. Your pension is tied to your SIN and cannot be taken from you. The size of our fund means fewer fees and larger average returns:

Myth #5: "Unions have outlived their usefulness.”
